Donald Trump has found the real hazard on the East Potomac golf course: a judge who wants a heads-up. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes blocked any more tree removal at the public course in Washington, D.C., and ordered the government to give written notice in advance before closing it or making irreversible changes. At 11:37pm ET, Trump posted his own ruling on hers: “the judge does not have the Constitutional Right to ‘ask for or receive notices,’” which he called “time-consuming, unnecessary, expensive, and unconstitutional.”
Then came the credentials check: “To have to give advanced notices to a judge who has no expertise in Golf, Architecture, Landscaping, Construction, or anything else having to do with building such a World Class Project, is not fair, appropriate, or Constitutional.” She asked for a notice, not a bunker design.
And then the safety case. “In its current form, the Course is extremely dangerous to play, in that the narrow and nondescript fairways are far too close together, leading to a constant barrage of people being hit with wayward shots, and the echoing throughout the air of the word, ‘FORE!’” That’s his claim. Golfers might call it golf.
AP reports that workers cut down at least 400 trees over a holiday weekend, and that Reyes expressed astonishment that the government had asked her “not to believe the sitting President.” In the same post, about two and a half hours after AP’s report, the sitting President wrote: “We are closing the East Potomac Golf Course Site as scheduled on November 15th.” He says the Interior Department will appeal and that he’s asking the D.C. Circuit “for immediate remedy.” He signed off: “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
