Robert F. Kennedy Jr. came to the Fort Myers stage to talk about shrimp loaded with antibiotics. The president reviewed his body.
The health secretary used his turn at the mic on imported shrimp and a new label for American-made seafood. Then Trump took the mic back: “Thank you, Bobby. By the way, seriously, did anybody ever see the build...” The verdict: “He’s got the body of a 30 year old.” He added that Kennedy is “the most important Kennedy in the Kennedy family by far,” asked the crowd “is that good?”, and then worked out what he’d done: “now with that statement, I just caused him a little more problem.” He followed it with: “No, he’s a great guy.”
It wasn’t a one-off. About 20 minutes earlier in the same speech he’d cast his Treasury secretary: “if I do a movie and if I have to pick a Secretary of the Treasury, this guy is central casting, right?” About three minutes after the Kennedy bit, telling a story about a military bonus, he described three generals as “handsome, big, strong guys,” then said they “were so good looking, I wanted to... go out immediately and make a movie.”
This week he also told a Greenville crowd he’d “never studied the body of a man before.” Three days later he’s reviewing his health secretary, his Treasury secretary and three generals. Those are three separate moments from one rally, and together they’re a casting call, not a speech.
