The day before the midterms, Donald Trump stood in front of the Lincoln Memorial and did what any humble public servant would do. He tried his name on for size.
He announced the “official opening” of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Then, two breaths later: “Now we’re giving serious thought to changing the name to the Trump Reflecting Pool.” He said Interior Secretary Doug Burgum would “have a lot of fun” announcing it.
Then the rare reverse gear, twice over: “I’m only kidding. Please don’t report it.” He even predicted the coverage: “they’ll say he’s changing the name.”
Sorry, sir. This is the man who says he asked Google to make the Atlantic the “Trump Ocean.” Nobody gets the benefit of the doubt on a 2,029-foot puddle after that. Not even a joking one.
