The Iran war isn’t over, and the president has already planned the drive home. “Don’t worry. We’ll take care of Cuba on our way back from Iran.”
Someone in the Fort Myers crowd shouted about Cuba, and Trump laid it out: “We’ll do a little stopover.” Then the details. “Those beautiful ships will pass Cuba. We’ll have one of them stop about 50 yards off the coast. They’ll raise up their hands. And then we’re going to send Marco Rubio in to finish up the deal.” Then he decided even the stop was optional. “We could just put him in there and he’ll figure it out. He’s a great guy.”
So that’s foreign policy as a road trip with one pit stop: a warship parked 50 yards offshore, a country with its hands up, and the secretary of state sent in to close. AP reports that moments after Trump spoke, Rubio posted that “now is the time” and urged people in Cuba to seek “a discrete partnership with the CIA.” First stop, Iran, whenever that ends. Then Cuba.
