Every tour needs a greatest hit, and at his Kansas rally Trump played the one France already reviewed.

His version: to cut American drug prices he “had to get all of the other nations to raise the price of their drugs,” France included. He said he asked Macron: “Emmanuel, do you mind doubling or tripling the price of your drugs, please?” When the French said no, he says he threatened “a 200% tariff on all wines and champagnes coming out of France,” and, in his telling, Macron folded and called it an honor. Trump’s summary: “And we won.”

The French presidency heard this one in January, when he told it at Davos, and answered on X that Macron “does not set their prices. They are regulated by the social security system and have, in fact, remained stable.” Then it posted a GIF of Trump mouthing “fake news.” Per CNBC, his Davos telling had “a 25% tariff on everything that you sell into the United States, and a 100% tariff on your wines and champagnes.” That same month he also threatened 200% tariffs on French wines and champagnes to push Macron into his Board of Peace, per CNBC.

By Kansas, the wine tariff in the story had doubled. The drug prices, France says, didn’t. A negotiation over prices Macron doesn’t set, backed by a threat that doubles between tellings. Otherwise, airtight.
