Donald Trump was in the middle of the saddest story of his Lubbock rally when he heard something and started guessing out loud: “Excavation, demolition or bombs? It’s one of the three.”
The story was Howard Lutnick’s. Trump was telling the crowd how Cantor Fitzgerald, the firm the Commerce Secretary ran, took the hit at the World Trade Center, how “everybody in his firm died,” and how “his brother was killed.” (658 of Cantor’s New York staff died, Lutnick’s brother Gary among them; Lutnick lived because he was taking his son to his first day of kindergarten.) Then, mid-story, he says he can hear something: “Could that be Iran dropping,” he began, and broke off to ask whether the crowd could hear it. “A lot of noise going on. What the hell are they doing” over there, he wondered.
Then the multiple-choice question, and straight back to 9/11, and to how Lutnick survived and rebuilt the firm.
