Trump says he ‘never said’ he’d stop Iran getting a nuclear weapon. His White House counted 40 times.

Donald Trump has kept so many promises, he says, that he’s now keeping ones he never made. Iran, for instance.

Wednesday night at Clemson he was deep into “promises made, promises kept” when he went one better: “half of the things that I’m telling you I did, I never discussed in the campaign.” His examples were the $1,776 military payment, Venezuela, and this: “I never said we’re going to stop Iran from having a nuclear ... You know, we have to do—“ A nuclear Iran, he said, would leave us “a tinderbox,” because “they are nuts.”

He did say it. Constantly. In June 2025 his own White House put out a release titled “President Trump Has Always Been Clear: Iran Cannot Have a Nuclear Weapon,” which counted the pledge “no fewer than 40 times on the campaign trail and even earlier.” Two days before the election: “Iran can’t have a nuclear weapon.” And on 9 October this year, on Truth Social: “I stopped Iran from having a Nuclear Weapon.”

He’d even said it earlier that same night. About half an hour before, from the same stage: “as you know, Iran will never have a nuclear weapon.” So the one promise he says he never made is the one he makes most, including on Wednesday. Promises made, promises kept, promises forgotten.
