Thursday night in Sioux City, Donald Trump told an Iowa crowd the Iran war would be “finished very soon.” Then he told them how much he cares which way: “One way or the other, it’s almost insignificant to me which way. But one way or the other, it’s going to be done very soon.”
The payoff, for him, was the pump. “And your gasoline prices and your oil is going to come tumbling down.” The president’s comfort with “which way” the war ends is what Iowa gets to take home from the rally.
Hours earlier on the South Lawn, he had already framed the same war as having “a price to pay, which I knew immediately when I did it.” In Iowa, that price is almost insignificant. To him.
