Donald Trump has won two presidential elections. He keeps counting three, and on Sunday he wondered aloud how he pulled off the one that doesn’t exist.

At his Port Huron, Michigan rally, he was complaining that the press once covered a Bernie Sanders crowd of a thousand while ignoring his event of 49,000 (his numbers): “They don’t mention me. They don’t mention me, Mike.” Then the big question: “How the hell did I ever win three times? You know? How did I do it?”

He didn’t. He won in 2016 and 2024, and he lost 2020 to Joe Biden, 306 to 232 in the Electoral College. That wasn’t a one-off slip, either. On Thursday in Sioux City, Iowa, he said “we won it three times” and concluded he has “the right to run again.”

Half a minute later he gave Michigan its homework: “pretend that I’m on the ballot,” because, he said, “When I’m not on the ballot, when I’m not on, we get 49% less” of the vote. Pretending is the only way he’s getting on one again. The 22nd Amendment stops at two wins, a number he keeps rounding up.
