Trump went on Fox News, on election night, live, to tell Fox News that its polls are bad. Fox had the results.
“The Fox polls are terrible,” he told Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, and advised the network to go and find itself a better pollster. Baier didn’t take that lying down: tonight, he said, the results were actually “pretty close” to what the Fox polls had found. Trump’s comeback: “Well, I don’t know about that.” Then he said the polls had been “wrong for 12 years.”
This had been building all day. At 6:36pm ET, before most polls had closed, he posted: “The FoxNews Poll, always the worst, is so insulting with the questions they ask. Every question is a hit job.” At 11:52pm ET he decided “FoxNews bears responsibility for these losses.” Then he called in to that same network to say so.
Pollsters are usually blamed when they get it wrong. Trump blamed this one for being, in its own anchor’s words, pretty close.
