Donald Trump has solved the Supreme Court confirmation fight, and Ted Cruz may want to sit down for this. “I would pick Ted Cruz to be the next Supreme Court justice,” he told his Lubbock rally on Tuesday. “I wouldn’t even have to make a phone call.”

The reasoning: “The Democrats will 100% vote for it because they hate the guy and they want to get rid of him.” The Republicans, he said, would vote 100% for it too, because “they would like to get rid of him.” Bipartisanship, at last: “100% of the vote and he would be a Supreme Court justice.”

He set it up by praising Cruz as “a brilliant guy, brilliant lawyer” and saying confirmations are “very hard” to get through. And he left himself an exit: “if we ever have a situation and I’m having a little problem with approval.” It’s a joke on tape, not a nomination. No seat is open: no justice has announced a retirement, and Samuel Alito says he intends to stay through this term.
