Of all the first names on Earth, Donald Trump reached for “Mohammed,” while sitting across from a reporter named Roop.
Sunday in Michigan, FOX 2 Detroit’s Roop Raj asked whether Iran could go back and restart work on its underground uranium. Trump said no, citing “thousands of tons of rock on top of it,” then moved on to his favorite branch of the military: “Well, don’t forget, we have Space Force because of me. So we have Space Force and Space Force can see everything.” Then came the example he picked: “I could read, if you had a badge on your jacket, and your first name was Mohammed, I could read that name beautifully right on your jacket. So, from space, it’s amazing.”
Raj, politely: “First name’s Roop, R-O-O-P.” Trump: “Okay.” Raj: “Just so you know.” Trump: “I thought so.” A few seconds later, as Raj tried to move on to data centers, Trump went back to explain: “I was only referring to if you were over there,” because “we have such unbelievable equipment” that it can read a name tag on a jacket. So the Mohammed was a hypothetical one, somewhere over there. The Roop was the one actually in the room.
The name-tag-from-orbit claim is his alone. The camera in the room did a fine job, though.
