Donald Trump closed out his election-eve speech with a victory lap for a war he isn’t sure was a war.
“We had a war with Iran,” he said at the Lincoln Memorial, and “we won.” A few seconds later: “I don’t know if you even call it a war because we haven’t been doing any fighting for months.” He came back to it a minute on. If you think “we’re talking about war, it’s not a war,” he said, and there’s been “very little fighting.” Iran’s leaders, he said, have asked the US to stop wiping them out, “and we will.”
A few hours later he phoned in to “Hannity” and kept working on the definition. “I mean, what’s a war? A war is fighting,” he said. Then he asked when the US had last fired anything: “This isn’t a war, this is a very soft war.” In the same interview he called going after Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain site “not a big deal.”
For the record, the war began Feb. 28, per the New York Post. Asked after the speech whether strikes on Iran would resume after the midterms, he said “No,” the Post reports. Earlier that day, per the Post, he told Axios: “One way or the other, we will do something, but there is no rush.” So the war is won, it isn’t a war, it’s soft, and something may happen anyway. All his words.
