Donald Trump’s count of bad California votes went from 20,000 to “millions” in about eight seconds.
At Joint Base Andrews on Thursday morning, a reporter asked about the judge’s ruling on 20,000 California ballots. Trump: “California is very corrupt. The elections are extremely corrupt. The judge should not have done that.” Then the climb: “We found 20,000, but there are hundreds of thousands of bad ballots, bad votes in California. Millions, in my opinion, millions.” And the payoff: “If California were honest,” he said, “I would have won it by a lot.”
The 20,000 is the Justice Department’s own list of Los Angeles County voters it calls “likely” noncitizens. On Wednesday U.S. District Judge David O. Carter refused to have their ballots set aside. NPR reports Los Angeles County’s review found problems with the list itself. The department has filed notice that it is appealing.
By our math, “millions” is at least 50 times the 20,000 he says they found. Trump lost California in 2016, 2020 and 2024. “In my opinion” is doing a lot of work.
