Trump says ‘Norway sucks’ because he didn’t get the Nobel Peace Prize

Donald Trump has found the country responsible for his feelings. In Port Huron, Michigan on Sunday, he told the crowd the Nobel Peace Prize “was gotten by a woman that nobody ever heard of.” His reaction, in his words: “I said, what about me? Do they do two of them?” Then the verdict: “Frankly, Norway sucks.” A few beats later: “Norway has become a shithouse country, actually.”

The woman nobody ever heard of is Navi Pillay, the South African jurist who ran the UN’s human rights office and sat as an international judge. She won the 2026 prize at 85.

He had already turned the grudge into an immigration rule about two minutes before that. “Anybody that would like to come into our country from Denmark, I’m all for it. But I must tell you, from Somalia, I’m sort of — I’ve had it with them.” Then: “Sweden, Norway, I don’t think so because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize... So I don’t want anybody from Norway. I don’t want anything to do with Norway.” In 2018, the Washington Post reported he wanted more immigrants from places like Norway, in the same Oval Office meeting where he reportedly called other nations “shithole countries.” One prize cycle later, Norway is in the other pile.

Around noon that day on the South Lawn, asked about María Corina Machado, he said she gave him the prize, “so how can I say anything else?” At the rally he told it again: “she gave me her Nobel Peace Prize. That was so nice.” So he has a Nobel Prize, by his own account. He just didn’t get one.
