Nothing says “golden age” like the president crying about it into a microphone in Kansas.

Monday night in Park City, Donald Trump told a rally crowd what he thinks about while sitting in “the most magnificent office in the world.” Not the economy. Not the war. Him. “Nobody appreciates how great a president I am!” Then, in case anyone missed the violin: “I feel very sad.”

The crowd tried to cheer him up. It didn’t take. He kept going with the list of things he feels nobody thanks him for: rebuilding the military, Space Force, “the best job numbers in history,” the border. A man reading his own Yelp review out loud and giving it five stars.

Then he saw the headline coming and tried to block it. If the media reported he was in a down mood, he said, “they are just absolute scum.” So: be sad on stage, call it news, call the people who report it scum. A full emotional cycle in one rally.

Here’s the bit he skipped. He did this with his approval at a record low and the midterms two weeks out. Turns out the country has noticed how great a president he is. That’s the problem.
