Donald Trump has a new Michigan Senate strategy: narrate the Democrats’ group chat.
At his Mar-a-Lago Halloween party on Saturday, asked about the split between Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens, Trump said: “Well, they’re really fighting.” Then: “nobody wants Abdul.” Stevens, who lost the August primary to El-Sayed, got the backhanded treatment: “you got to give her credit. She tried to do it, but she can’t.” Also, “a good, solid pretty Democrat, I think.” His version of the reconciliation: “He wanted to get her support. He got her support. They spent a day together.” Per NBC, the Detroit event set for Sunday would have been her first time on the trail with him, and his campaign has since asked her to stay away.
Then the usual. “He is a person that hates black people, hates Jewish people, and I think probably hates all people,” Trump said, offering no evidence. And: “He’s a jihadist, and he’s a guy that, frankly, should not be in the Senate.” Also no evidence. El-Sayed was born in Michigan.
Stevens, for her part, told CNN on Wednesday: “Of course I’m voting for our Democratic nominee for Senate,” per NBC. The real fight, per NBC, is over an outside group’s ad about Israel. Trump’s version has more jihad in it.
