Donald Trump is outraged about a $50 million deal tied to a man he pardoned. Just not about the pardon.
At his Mar-a-Lago Halloween party on Saturday, a New York Times reporter asked about Alina Habba Mildon’s deal. Trump called it “terrible,” then: “I told her and I said, ‘I don’t want her paid.’” He said “she used her relationship to do that and it was far too much,” and allowed that “it’s one thing for a person to get paid legal fees or whatever. She’s a lawyer.” The verdict: “I thought it was totally obnoxious and outrageous and it’s not acceptable.”
The deal, per the Times: the family of Venezuelan banker Julio Herrera Velutini guaranteed Habba Mildon, once Trump’s own lawyer, more than $50 million over four years, signed while she was acting US attorney in New Jersey. Trump pardoned Herrera on 15 January, according to the Justice Department’s website, as Reuters reports. Habba Mildon says she was never paid for a pardon and never did any work on one.
So the president is outraged by what she got paid. The pardon the banker got came from Trump.
