First Mexico “did pay for that wall.” Now, he says, Canada will pay for the pipeline. Both times, per him.
Asked on the tarmac in Dubuque whether the Canada trade deal is back on, Trump said: “we have the concept of a very good deal with Canada.” Also: “we’ve been losing money for many years with Canada, many, many years, 70, 75 years.” The concept, he said, is “great for our farmers, great for our country,” and fine for Canada.
Asked whether the Keystone Pipeline is part of it: “They’re going to build the Keystone Pipeline. They’re going to pay for it. They’re going to pay for all of it. We’re going to give them the route.” Mark Carney’s version, posted Sunday, per Reuters and CBC: “Our teams will now be working in the coming weeks to deliver that outcome.” No pipeline in it. A source familiar with the discussions told Radio-Canada, per CBC: “We are not on the verge of an agreement just yet.”
Then the closer for Iowa: he said the tariffs U.S. farmers pay to send things to Canada would all go. And “They were paying as much as 400% for milk products and other things.” His number. FactCheck.org and CNN found Canada’s sky-high dairy rates only kick in above the quotas, and U.S. dairy inside them generally goes in duty-free. “I hope I remember to mention that in my speech,” he added.
