On Election Day morning Donald Trump posted his endorsement slates, state by state, each name with his “Complete and Total Endorsement.” By the small hours of Wednesday, the Associated Press had called both chambers of Congress for Democrats, and a long list of the names on those slates had lost.

He spent the night explaining that none of it was about him. “I wasn’t on the Ballot,” he posted at 10:37pm ET.

What AP has called: AP called control of the House and the Senate for Democrats overnight (links in the source files below). In the races below, AP called the contest against the candidate Trump endorsed:

Texas Senate: James Talarico beat Ken Paxton.

Texas governor: Gina Hinojosa beat Greg Abbott.

South Carolina Senate: Annie Andrews beat Darline Graham.

Ohio Senate: Sherrod Brown beat Jon Husted.

Ohio governor: Amy Acton beat Vivek Ramaswamy.

North Carolina Senate: Roy Cooper beat Michael Whatley, whom AP describes as Trump’s handpicked candidate.

Kansas Senate: Adam Hamilton beat Roger Marshall, for whom Trump rallied twice in Kansas.

Iowa Senate: Josh Turek beat Ashley Hinson.

Iowa governor: Rob Sand beat Zach Lahn.

Georgia Senate: Jon Ossoff beat Mike Collins.

Georgia governor: Keisha Lance Bottoms beat Rick Jackson.

Those are the top-of-ticket names on his Election Day slates for Texas, Ohio, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas and the Carolinas, as of AP’s calls overnight. We count a race only once AP has called it; we don’t run projections or vote counts.

What he said instead:

10:37pm ET: “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” No evidence was offered for the landslide part, and there’s no ballot to check it against.

11:35pm ET: Abbott “wouldn’t have lost,” he wrote, if he “hadn’t become a RINO in the last six months of his Political Life.”

11:38pm ET: He announced he would “become a Political Pundit” on why candidates “won and lost.”

11:40pm ET: A picture of a red cap that says VETO.

11:52pm ET: “FoxNews bears responsibility for these losses.” Axios notes he offered no evidence for that.

To the New York Times, by phone, he said he was “absolutely willing” to accept the results and would probably “work something out” with the new majorities. Axios reports he told Politico he had spoken with Democratic leaders around 11pm ET. At 11:40pm ET came the VETO hat.
